1st Bayswater Sea Scout Group

Term 3 2008

---

We must find new Leaders

Without leaders we have no group. There should be three leaders in each section. Just to have someone who would do paper work would be a great help. Collecting form and money, also keeping record of attendance and ensuring badge work is up to date

This is a big commitment to take on but a rewarding one. Meeting new people and learning new skills.  If we had more leaders the time commitment would not be as great, as you would share the responsibility. Have a night off if you needed to.

To become a leader & adult helper you need to

Fill out the Scout M3A (includes Police Check through Branch) and M3B forms. This may seem like a lot of paperwork but, once you read through it is not that bad.

A working with children card number

Two referees, as part of the M3B

When you need to be available

As an Adult helper you would need to be at the section nights and help on other activities

As an Assistant leader you would need to be available for section nights. Assist in the programming with other leaders. Attend some meetings with the group and district leaders. Attend activities

Training

The Group will pay for your training

Adult Helper Scouting Essentials one weekend at Branch

Leader

Scouting Essentials a weekend at Branch

Section Leader Skills two weekends at Manjedal

In the short future you will be able to do training over the computer so you don’t have so much time away from home.

As we are a Sea Scout Group we also need people with their boating TL3 License (for the motor boat) and coxing badge (for sailing

If you know anyone who would be willing give it a go please let us know

We also are looking for

Treasurer

You need only basic book keeping skills. Your duties would be to

Keep accounts -- We have four. One for the group and one for each section

Pay bills

Collect and bank money

Print out invoices and send them out

Fundraising officer

Would be the one to organise the fundraising event

Make up rosters

Organise Equipment

Source the food

The Scouts have had a busy term, full of activities:

Junior Avon Decent

We had two canoes in the JAD this year both very successful (more details in the main article) Next year we are aiming to enter more teams.

Nighthawk

This year Nighthawk was held in Gingin.  It was bitterly cold and very windy, but we arrived in plenty of time to set up camp on the oval.

We had just one patrol participating, Bronwyn, Sam, Simone, Alex and Fraser. Simone had been ill all week but went to school on Friday just so she could convince her mum that she was fit for Nighthawk – now that’s dedication!

The patrol set off at 20.00 and successfully negotiated the course finishing around 04.30 for a few hours sleep before heading off home.  They all did very well particularly in the frigid conditions

Group Camp

Group camp was held at lake Leschenaultia. The Scouts camped out and the rest were in the warm and dry hall cuddled up to the log fire!  It was a very successful and enjoyable camp with canoeing on the lake, a hike and setting up tents in the dark.  The practice on the previous two troop nights paid dividends!  The record for striking a 6 man tent and packing it correctly in the dark is 3 minutes 56 seconds! – well done Panthers.

Sailing

Still too early for the main sailing to start but we have three sailing days planned – unfortunately with Stork away overseas for much of the term, there was little chance to sail. The boatshed has been revamped and all the boats now fit in.

Camp West

A brilliant Camp West has put everyone’s mind towards Jamboree.  Camp west was an ideal opener, getting the participants fully into a major camp lifestyle.
